Canon Interactive Manual

The Brief:

Modern SLR cameras incorporate sophisticated computer processing and provide the user with an unparalleled level of control. As the complexity of the camera increase so does the length of the user manual. The current manual is approaching 250 pages in length and is beginning to intimidate the average user. The user can get lost in the information and may choose not to read the manual leaving them unaware of the camera's functions. Some users choose to purchase less expensive point and shoot model because they do not want the hassle of learning how to use more complex equipment. To resolve this problem and new method of instruction should be created that easily educates the customer.

The Concept:

The traditional printed manual requires too much length to effectively communicate the level of information. Most users who purchase this type of higher end camera have access to a computer so an interactive manual was a viable choice. The interactive format quickly familiarizes the user with the equipment and provides an intuitive information exchange.

The Solution:

At the core of the manual was a 3D model of the camera build in Rhino3D and animated in Maya. The user can rotate the model and at 90 degree angles the model glows to indicate the controls. The user can then select a control and interact with it as they would in real life to discover the functions. Full camera specifications and contact information for local Canon support are also available.
